Bend Heroes Foundation has completed its mission of honoring WWII Veterans with free 4 day trips to our nation’s Capitol to visit THEIR national WWII Memorial, 10 other veterans memorials and our nation’s Capitol. A video of our last Honor Flight trip can be viewed here: War Stories: Honor Flight
During 15 trips over the last 7 years, the Foundation’s Honor Flight of Eastern Oregon (HFEO) program honored 558 WWII Heroes from 17 counties east of the Cascades. About 150 of them were from Central Oregon.
As 97% of our nation’s WWII Veterans have passed away and we have no one on our waiting list for next year, we decided to convert our HFEO Hub into the Honor Flight of Central Oregon (HFCO) Hub honoring Korean War Veterans from Deschutes, Jefferson and Crook Counties.
On Nov. 20, we held a workshop with local Patriots who are interested in our proposal to create the HFCO Hub. Twelve attendees volunteered to serve on the new HFCO board. The Foundation offered to coach the new group on administering its new Honor Flight Hub, fundraising and training new HFCO trip leaders on an inaugural trip during May, 2018.
HFCO must raise funds to pay for the Korean War Veterans travel – about $1,250 per veteran making fundraising a vital and “up front” task. Honor Flight hubs are 501c3 non-profits making donations to HFCO tax deductible.
We will meet again at Redmond VFW Post 4108 in early December to finalize the new HFCO Board’s membership and create the necessary documents to form the new hub.
